A Beginners Guide to Vaping

What is Vaping?

Vaping is the act of inhaling vapour produced by a vaporiser or an electronic cigarette. The vapour is produced from a material such as an e-liquid, concentrate, or dry herb.

What is a Vaporiser?

A vaporiser is an electronic device that turns the vaping material into vapour.

A vaporiser usually consists of :

  • A Battery - The sole purpose of which is to generates power for the heating element. A milliampere hour (mAh), which is a 1000th of an ampere hour (Ah), is used to express the energy capacity of vaporiser batteries. They usually range from 400 mAh to 1300 mAh (For reference, the Iphone 10 has a 2716 mAh battery). Now, the higher the mAh, the more the charge your battery will hold and the longer it will last. But there exists a trade off as the larger capacity batteries are also larger in size and look like chimney boxes!

  • A Main Console/Tank/Cartridge - This is where the vaping material (e-liquid, concentrate, or dry herb) is held. The tank capacities are measured in millimetres (ml).

  • Atomizer or Cartomizer or Clearomizer- This exists within the tank and holds the respective heating element, which contacts the vaping material and transforms it into vapour for inhalation. The difference between the three is that the capacity, complexity and vaping longevity increases as you move from an Atomizer to a Cartomizer to a Clearomizer.

What materials can be Vaped?

The vast majority of vapers use e-liquids, but other common materials include waxy concentrates and dry herbs. Different vaporisers support the vaping of different materials. For example, e-liquids vaporisers have a cartridge or tank, while a dry herb vaporiser will have a heating chamber. Multipurpose vaporisers allow you to vape different materials simply by switching cartridges.

What is the Vapour in the Vaporiser?

Vapour is defined as “a substance diffused or suspended in the air which is originally a liquid or solid turned into a gaseous form.” The vapour in a vaporiser is the gaseous form of any of the vaping materials.

The vapour looks thicker than smoke, however, smells much better, and quickly dissipates into the air.

What is E-Liquid?

E-liquid, is the primary material used in vaporisers.

E-liquid is composed of:

  • Nicotine - where 18mg or 1.8% is the nicotine content of a traditional cigarette.

  • Flavour

  • PG - Proplylene Glycol - The higher the % of PG the greater the throat hit and the better for stealth vaping (less vapour produced when exhaled).

  • VG - Vegetable Glycerin - The higher the % of VG the smoother and the more dense the clouds of smoke exhaled.

Unlike the smoke of a traditional tobacco cigarette, most e-liquids produce vapour with a pleasant odour and can be of whichever flavour you prefer.
